When do picks need to be in each week?

Picks have to be in when the first game of the week kicks off unless you use a custom deadline. If you set a custom deadline for late in the week, Sunday or Monday, then you can pick a team in any game up until the game kicks off or the custom deadline day/time passes, which ever is first.. Regardless of the custom deadline, you must pick all games your pool requires, but you can come back later and make changes for any games that have not kicked off up until they kick off or the custom deadline day/time passes.

How are tie-breaks handled?

Our system ranks users by: 1. Total points earned (for the week or for the season depending on which page you're viewing). 2. MNF tie-break guess (if used) closest to the actual total regardless of going over or under. For season standings, the most recent week's tie-break guess is used. 3. Who got their picks in earliest for the week. You can see the exact pick date/time by clicking the green icon next to a username on the weekly results (all picks) page. For season standings, the most recent week's pick date/time are used. Wins/loss record and win % are not used in any way to rank users. This is just how our system ranks users. A pool admin can determine winners any way they'd like.

Are point spreads set with half points to avoid ties?

PoolHost.com point spreads can vary and are not forced to half points which means there can be ties. If you want to avoid ties, you can use custom point spreads in your pool where you enter your own point spreads each week. This allows you to set spreads all with half points.

When I pick in one pool, will my picks automatically be entered in my other pools?

No, you must pick in each pool separately by navigating to each from the site home page or from the My Pools page.

Can picks be entered after the deadline?

No, picks lock when the pools deadline passes. The pool admin has the ability to enter picks still after the deadline if necessary. Any picks entered after the deadline by a pool admin will be marked so other users can see. A pool admin can set a custom deadline for later in the week. Any games before that deadline can be picked or changed up until the game kicks off. Once the custom deadline passes, all picks are locked.

When is the pick deadline each week?

The default deadline is the kickoff of the first included game of the week. All picks lock at that time. A pool admin can choose to exclude the Thurs/Fri games in which case the deadline would be the first game of the weekend. A pool admin can also set a custom deadline at which time all picks lock, but any games scheduled before that deadline can be picked up until they kick off. Your pool home page will always show the current week's deadline. Be aware that the pool deadline in one pool may be different than it is in another pool.

Yes, as long as the deadline hasn't passed or the game hasn't kicked off. You can go to Make/Change Picks in the Picks menu to change your picks.

I made picks on the Make/Change Picks page and I see them on the View Picks page, but not on the Weekly Results page. Why?

Picks are only revealed on the Weekly Results page after the pool's deadline passes or games kick off, depending on how your pool's deadline is set.

Can I see picks that other users made in the pool?

Yes. On the Weekly Results page, you'll be able to see every users picks for the current week or previous weeks and how they did including their points earned. But picks will only be revealed after the pools deadline passes or as games kick off when they'll be revealed.

Why do I see X's under the games on the Weekly Results page instead of the teams that users have picked?

If you see X's, this means that your pool deadline hasn't passed or the game didn't kick off, so users can still make or change picks for that game and so it shouldn't be revealed yet. In games where fewer than all games are picked, showing the X's can be used for strategy to avoid picking the same game as other users whom you may want to try to catch. If a pool admin doesn't want this feature, they can change it by going to Pool Settings in the Pool Admin menu and then to the Picks tab where you can disable the feature allowing users to see the games (not the teams) that others have picked.

When does each new week start?

Each new week starts early in the morning after the last games of the current week. Typically during the regular season, that would be early Tuesday mornings after the Monday night game. If there is no Monday night game, the last game is on Sunday, then the new week will start early Monday morning.

Can I see picks or standings for previous week?

Yes, go to Weekly Results in the Pool Results menu. On that page, you can choose any week of the season to view picks and scoring for the week you choose.

What are point spreads?

Sometimes, a game may be an uneven matchup between two teams. In order to even a game out so that picking a team is more difficult, point spreads are used. A point spread is the number of points by which the experts expect the Favorite Team to win. If you pick the Favorite Team, you win if the Favorite wins the game by MORE than the point spread. If you pick the Underdog Team, you win the game if the Underdog wins outright OR if the Underdog loses, but not by more than the point spread. On our web site, point spreads always apply to the HOME team. If the point spread is negative, this means the Home Team is the Favorite and the Away Team is the Underdog. If the point spread is positive, then the Home Team is the Underdog and the Away Team is the Favorite. Example: San Francisco -4.5 Dallas Assuming San Francisco is the Home Team, then San Francisco is the Favorite and Dallas is the Underdog. If you pick San Francisco, San Fran must win by MORE than 4.5 points for you to win with that pick. If you pick Dallas, Dallas has to win the game or lose by less than 4.5 points for you to win picking Dallas. Anther way to look at it is to add the point spread to the Home Team's score at the end of the game to find out who won using the point spread. Point spread are occasionally made with 1/2 point increments. This guarantees that there will not be a tie for that game when using point spreads.

How does pool scoring work?

We have different scoring options available. Your pool can use 2,1,0 scoring where a win=2 points, a tie=1 point, as loss=0 points. Your pool can use 1,0,0 scoring where a win=1 point and a tie/loss=0 points. If a pool uses confidence weights, then scoring works like this: Confidence weights w/2,1,0 Scoring: win=2 x weight value, Tie=1 x weight, Loss=0 points Confidence weights w/1,0,0 Scoring: win=1 x weight value, Tie/Loss=0 points Pools can use points spreads or straight picks. If your pool uses points spreads, than your team must cover the point spread in order to be correct pick. A team can cover and still lose the game and would still be a correct pick in a pool that uses points spreads. You can go to Pool Rules in the menu of your pool to see all the rules in your pool and how they are set.

Why are you showing my team lost when they actually won?

Make sure you check to see if your pool is using point spreads. If you see them on the Picks page, Weekly Results page or Scores page, then your pool uses them. You can also go to Pool Rules to confirm that. If your pool uses point spreads, then a correct pick in your pool is the team who covers the point spread. A team that covers doesn't necessarily win the game and a team that wins may not cover the point spread. Go to Pool Rules in the menu of your pool to confirm the settings. You can also search this FAQ to learn how point spreads work.

Why is the site showing a team has won or lost when the game is still underway?

Our site has live scoring which means as the scores change, so will the results in your pool so you can see exactly where you stand as the game progresses.

When to pool scores update and how often?

During games, scores and pool results should update every 5 minutes.

What is a confidence pool?

Weights are values that you assign to each of your picks, the higher the value, the more confidence you have in the pick. If your pool requires picking 8 games, then you must assign each pick a value from 1 to 8, 8 being most confident. When the points for the week are calculated, the weight is multiplied by the game result. A win is 2 points times the weight value, a tie is 1 point times the weight value, and a loss is 0 points.

Does PoolHost.com have live scoring?

Yes, NFL scores on PoolHost are updated every 5 minutes and so will be pool results based on the live scoring, so see where you stand during the games as they progress.

Why is someone ranked higher than me even though I have a higher win percentage than them?

We don't use win % in any way to rank users. There are many reasons why a person could have a lower win % than you and still be ranked higher. In confidence pools, win % is meaningless because you assign weights to picks which makes how many correct picks irrelevant. In pools with a custom deadline, it is possible that some users have fewer picks in a week than other users. so win % is unreliable for results and ranking in pools. Only points earned are used.

Survivor Pools

Can I have double elimination, buy backs, etc.?

Yes, you can reinstate a user who gets knocked out at any time as many times as you'd like. When a player has a loss, they get locked from picking. To reinstate them, you simply go to Lock/Unlock a Player in the Pool Admin menu to unlock the player so they can continue picking.

Confidence Pick'ems

What is a Confidence Pick'em?

It's like a regular pick'em but you assign a rank or weight value to each team. If there are 16 game this week and your pool picks from all games, you must rank the games from 16 to 1 where 16 is your most confident. If you get a pick correct, you'll get it's confidence weight value times the correct pick amount (1 or 2 depending on your scoring setup).

Is it possible to always have the highest weight value to be 16 even in weeks with less than 16 games?

Yes, there is a setting to make the maximum weight value in all weeks to be 16. This only applies to pools which pick all games each week.

If a player misses picking a game, but can pick from the rest, which weight values will be available?

If your pool uses a custom deadline allowing users to pick from remaining games even if they miss an earlier game, we have an option in settings to drop the highest weight value first when you have fewer games to choose from then other players. When not checked, the lowest weight value will dropped instead as fewer games are available.

Regular Pick'ems

Can I add and manage an additional set of picks with my single user account?

Yes you can. In your pool, go to Add a Picksheet in the Picks menu of your pool. This feature must be enabled to use, so if it says the feature is disabled, you'll need to contact your pool admin to see if they'll enable for you.

General Pool Settings

Can I set a custom deadline in my pool?

Yes, go to Pool Settings in the Pool Admin menu and then to the Deadline tab. In NFL pools, you can set the day of week and time for your deadline each week. If you choose a deadline for late in the week, like late Sunday or even late Monday, then any games before your deadline can be picked up until they kick off.

NFL Pool Admins

Why do my users have to pick all games before the Thursday game? Why can't they pick Thursday and then pick or change picks after Thursday?

The default deadline is first kickoff of the week. But you can go to Pool Settings in the Pool Admin menu and then to the Deadline tab to set a custom deadline. If you set a custom deadline late in the week, like Sunday night or even Monday night, then any games before the custom deadline can be picked or changed up until those games kick off. Users must always enter ALL picks required by your pool each week, but they can continue to change picks for unplayed games up until they kick off or your custom deadline passes.

Can a pool admin enter or change picks for a user for a previous week?

Yes, you go to Make/Change Picks in the Picks menu and then, as pool admin, you can choose the username and week number for the user and week you want to make a change for and enter or change those picks.

Can I use the Monday Night Football game total point guess as a tie-break?

Yes, you can go to Pool Settings and then to the Picks tab to enable MNF tie-break. I'm currently using another site. Can I transfer my pool to PoolHost.com?

Yes. This is relatively easy to do. When you create a pool you become the pool admin for that pool. You now have the ability to enter picks for all players for the current week and previous weeks. You just need to create the pool using the rules that best suit you and then transfer all the pick information into your pool on our site.

I missed the start of the season. Can I still create a pool and enter picks for users so they can continue playing online?

Yes, you can create a pool any time and as the pool admin, you can enter picks for any users, or you can start your pool and allow users to continue from the time you start your pool and forward.

General Bracket Questions

When is the pick deadline?

Picks are due at tip-off of the NCAA College Basketball Tournament for a full bracket game or tip-off of the Sweet 16 round for a Sweet 16 bracket game.

Can I see the brackets that other users have submitted?

After the pool deadline, you can go to the Standings page and click on any user's name to see their full bracket. Also, the last column in the Standings table will show each user's Final Four picks and whether or not they are still in the tourney.

Can the pool admin enter picks for me if I miss the deadline?

Yes, a pool admin has full control of their pool and can put late brackets in if they choose to accept them.

How does bracket scoring work?

If Round Weights are not used, each win, by itself is worth 1 point regardless of round. If Round Weights are use, each win is worth the 'weight' value that is assigned to that round. If Round of 64 has a weight of 1, then each round of 64 win is worth 1 point. If Round of 32 has a weight of 2, then each round of 32 win is worth 2 points, etc. Round Weights are decided by the pools admin when he/she creates the pool. The admin can also choose to use Seed Bonuses. A Seed Bonus is calculated by taking the points for a given win and either adding or multiplying the winning teams Seed value to the point value to get the new point total. The admin can also add an Underdog Bonus which simply adds to the current point total for that win the difference between the picked teams seed and the favorites seed if the picked team is seeded lower and wins the game. The seed difference is the difference in seed of the ACTUAL matchup, not the picked matchup. Both Seed Bonuses and Underdog Bonuses are set by the pool admin for each round when the pool is created. Please check your pools 'Pool Rules' page to see how your pools scoring is defined.

How does the championship game total points tie-break work?

The person who gets the closest to the total point value regardless of going over is the winner. If two people have the same total points and have the same championship game tie-break total point value, then the person who made their picks first wins. Sorting by who made their picks first is automatic. The tie break only decides between people whose pick points are tied. The tie-break total points do not add to the players total points for the tournament.

How does the Championship Game total point guess tie-break work?

If players tied for their tournament total points AND they've picked the same championship game total point value, then the player who picked first wins.

Bracket Pool Admin

What are Round Weights?

Round weights are the number of points you get for each win in each round. Points for a win in each round can all be set to the same value or you can give different point values for wins in different rounds. Since the number of games in each round decrease after each round, it is common to assign more points to games in later rounds. For example, there are 32 games in the round of 64 teams, 16 games in the round of 32, 8 games in the Sweet 16, etc. If you make each round of 64 game worth 1 point and each round of 32 game worth 2 points, each Sweet 16 game worth 4 points, etc. then each round will be worth 32 points. You can choose any round weighting you'd like.

What is a Seed Bonus?

The seed bonus uses the picked teams' seed value to give a bonus to the player if the team picked has a lower seed than the other team. For example, in the round of 64, if the Round Weight is set to 2 and if a player picks the 12 seed to beat the 5 seed, the player will be awarded 12 + 2 = 14 points if the Add Seed option is selected for the Round of 64, or 12 * 2 = 24 points if the Multiply Seed option is selected for the Round of 64.

What is an Underdog Bonus?

If you enable this choice for a given round, if a player picks a team with a lower seed than it's opponent to win a game, the player will also get the difference between the picked underdog's seed value and the favorite's seed value. For example, if a player picks a 14 seed to beat a 3 seed, then if the 14 seed wins the game, the player will get 14 - 3 = 11 addtional points. The bigger the upset, the more points the player gets for the pick. THE POINT DIFFERENCE IS CALCULATED USING THE ACTUAL TEAM MATCHUP, NOT THE PICKED MATCHUP! If you pick a 13 seed to meet a 5 seed in the round of 32 and have the 13 seed winning but the actual matchup was the 13 vs. the 12 seed, you'd only get 1 Underdog Bonus point instead of 8. Also, if, in a game, you picked a team that would be an Underdog but the actual matchup makes the team you picked to win the favorite, you will NOT get the Underdog points.

Can I put in bracket picks for my users even after the deadline?

Yes, a pool admin can enter bracket picks for any users, even after the pool deadline. Go to Make Picks in the Picks menu and choose the username you want to enter picks for. You can then fill out a bracket for them.

General Squares Pool Questions

How is a squares pool played?

People choose squares in a 10x10 grid. When the deadline for the pool passes, random number from 0 to 9 are assigned to each column and row. The columns numbers represent the last digit of the score for one team and the row number represent the last digit of the score for the other team. At the end of each quarter, the winner for that quarter is the person whose square matches the column and row corresponding the score for that quarter.

Can you give an example of a squares pool?

With one team assigned to the rows and the other team assigned to the columns, if the score is 24-17 at the half, with the 24 points belonging to the columns team and the 17 points belonging to the rows team, the halftime winner would be the person with square column 4, row 7 on the grid. This is played the same way for each quarter so all participants have a chance to win in each quarter. If there is a scoreless quarter, it is possible for the same person to win twice.

Why would I want to play in a squares pool?

This kind of pool makes watching the Super Bowl or any sporting event more fun because rather than cheering for a single team, you are hoping that the teams score in a certain way that selects your grid square. For example, a team deciding to go for the end zone before the half versus running out the clock could affect the winner for the halftime score.

What's the difference between a Super Bowl Square Pool and Custom Squares Pool?

These are the exact same game except in a Custom Squares Pool, you specify the names of both teams when you create the pool, you set the deadline date and time, and you enter the scores yourself. In a Super Bowl Squares Pool, the teams are already selected, the deadline can be customized to various times before the kickoff date/time, and scores will update automatically.
